Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County will host its EARTH Center Garden, Arts, and Folk Festival from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday, August 23 at the EARTH Center, located in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park at 42 Riva Ave. in South Brunswick.

Throughout the afternoon, Rutgers Master Gardeners will offer advice on horticulture and stewardship while guiding visitors through various teaching gardens and learning projects. Examples of their work include: a children’s garden, vegetable display garden and the popular butterfly house.

Visitors can also get a close look at the Rows for the Hungry Project which in recent years has grown and donated close to 30 tons of fresh, first-quality produce to local food banks in Middlesex County. The scale and precision of this operation is sure to inspire community minded residents to join their volunteer efforts.

Attendees, who may have missed the chance at their county fair, can join in the “Greatest of the Garden” exhibition and show off the homegrown produce selections they are most proud of; categories include: Largest Tomato, Largest Zucchini, Strangest Heirloom, Biggest Sunflower Bloom and Best Like-ness to a Celebrity or Historical Figure. Simply bring your spec-imen to the Teaching tent before 2 pm and prepare to be roasted and rewarded near events end..

This year also joining the fun will be the New Jersey Folk Festival (NJFF), one of the nation’s longest continuously running folk festivals. This event will bring together performers, artists, communities, organizations, and vendors to highlight folklife and folk arts across the state. The festival will feature a full day of musical acts across multiple stages, an engaging heritage area, activities for all ages, garden tours, folk and agricultural talks, food from local vendors, and much more. Best of all, the event is FREE!

This event is a great opportunity for residents to acquaint themselves with the programs Middlesex County’s office of Rutgers Cooperative Extension has to offer.
