Fisheries & Aquaculture

New Jersey's marine ecosystems provide essential resources—food, recreation, and employment—that benefit residents across the state. Effectively managing these ecosystems to sustain and revitalize our finfish and shellfish fisheries requires coordinated efforts from the shoreline to offshore waters.

Through research, education, and outreach, Rutgers Cooperative Extension supports the sustainable use of marine resources and the development of innovative technologies. Programs focus on increasing public understanding of local species and habitats, restoring shellfish populations, enhancing coastal habitats, and protecting vital shoreline ecosystems.
Strategic initiatives also include investments in shellfish and finfish aquaculture, along with training and outreach related to species of commercial, recreational, and ecological value. These efforts play a critical role in advancing sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in New Jersey, contributing to both environmental health and economic resilience.
