NJ Empower to Prevent

National Diabetes Prevention Program from the CDC

In 2021 Rutgers Cooperative Extension's Department of Family and Community Health Sciences (FCHS) launched NJ Empower to Prevent (NJEP), the state version of the National Diabetes Prevention Program from the CDC. NJEP is a year-long, distance-learning lifestyle change program facilitated by trained Lifestyle Coaches.

Delivered conveniently on Zoom, NJEP consists of 16 interactive, 1-hr weekly sessions, followed by bimonthly and monthly sessions for the remainder of the year. Participants learn to improve nutrition, increase physical activity, and stay motivated to reduce their risk for developing diabetes through modest weight loss. Group sessions provide social support, and one-on-one coaching provides individualized attention. The program incorporates special topics, motivational "challenges," and other fun activities to engage participants.
