School Wellness

Schools are at the forefront of addressing health disparities, creating equitable opportunities for all students, and serving as critical hubs for fostering healthy, informed citizens. FCHS at Rutgers Cooperative Extension aims to empower schools to create environments that promote healthy eating, physical activity, and environmental stewardship. By working collaboratively, we can dismantle systemic barriers, improve access to nutritious food, and create equitable opportunities for all students. This will not only impact their health but also foster informed and engaged citizens.

Programs Spotlight

New Jersey School Climate Change Corps

The Rutgers Cooperative Extension’s Food Waste Team launched the New Jersey School Climate Change Corps (NJSCCC) in 2023. Eight AmeriCorps members were placed in 12 schools to educate fifth-grade students, staff, and food service personnel about food waste and implement reduction measures. The team developed an educational program called Guardians of the Food Galaxy and implemented strategies like Share Tables. Data shows a significant increase in climate change and plant-based eating knowledge among participating students.

Engagement

In the 2024-2025 year, FCHS staff hosted 12 programs related to school wellness, reaching over 400 NJ residents in this topic alone.
